Setting an elegant tableis more than just placing plates and cutlery at random. Tea tableware follow precise rules, blending aesthetics and refinement to offer a convivial and harmonious experience. Whether for a family dinner, a wedding or a professional event, here are six essential steps to create a table worthy of the finest receptions.

Step 1: Choosing the right topping for an elegant base

For the most refined table, opt for sobriety.

Start by choosing a neutral-colored tablecloth whose dimensions will guarantee a nice fall. Choose a material and colors in harmony with the tableware and the reception hall.

If you've opted for a majestic wooden table, covering it with a delicate table runner in silk chiffon or cotton gauze in the tones of your decorating palette will give it that extra touch of elegance.

Step 2: Arrange the plates precisely

In tableware, the arrangement of plates follows precise rules:

  • They should be placed about 1 cm from the edge of the table, perfectly aligned opposite the chairs.
  • The bread plate is positioned at the top, to the left of the main plate.
  • Plan one plate for each dish served: starter, main course, cheese, dessert...

Step 3: Placing cutlery in the right place

French-style table setting

As a general rule, cutlery is placed in the order of use, with those to be used first placed on the outside, and so on.

For a traditional French table setting, the fork is placed to the left of the plate, with the tines remaining on the tablecloth.

  • Knives are positioned on the right, blade towards the plate.
  • The table spoon is also on the right, curved towards the ceiling.
  • Cheese and dessert cutlery are placed above the plate.
  • Leave 2 cm space between each cutlery, and don't forget to align them.

Step 4: Traditionally arranged glasses

The placement of glasses follows a well-defined hierarchy in tableware. They are arranged at the top of the plate, from largest to smallest.

On the left, the largest glass is for water, followed by a smaller glass for red wine, then an even smaller glass for white wine, and finally, on the far right, a little further back than the others, comes the champagne flute.

Step 5: Arrange towels with refinement

An essential element in the art of table setting, the napkin adds the finishing touch to your table setting. In the French tradition, napkins are placed to the left of the forks.

But there's nothing to stop you placing them in the center of the plate with a pretty napkin ring, or adding a touch of greenery with foliage or delicate flowers. Dare to use color to add character to your table!

Step 6: Perfect the decor for a wow effect

Let your creativity guide you.

Floral decoration is the finishing touch, bringing freshness and vibrancy. Place one or more small bouquets of flowers in the center of your table.

Add lovely candleholders and candleholders to provide that essential source of warm, soft light.

The finishing touch: pretty stationery in the colors of your decor. Place cards and menus will complete your table decoration.
